| These vividly expressive, even antic, pieces are well rendered in these classic recordings that include Sleigh Ride and others. |

Album Review
Although it may seem like composer Leroy Anderson's music is everywhere, especially during the Christmas holidays, this is not the result of his music being "over-recorded." All of the major labels combined have only brought out three new discs of Anderson's work in the entire digital era: Leonard Slatkin's "The Typewriter" on BMG Classics and already out of print; the Cincinnati Pops' Telarc recording of Anderson's Piano Concerto In C, likewise out of print; and Richard Hayman's "Orchestral Evergreens" for Naxos. Anderson's slim worklist, with its emphasis on short pieces, is partly to blame, but it is also the fact that the older recordings by Fiedler, Abravanel, Anderson himself, and here, Frederick Fennell, are so excellent that they prove a hard act to follow. "Frederick Fennell Conducts the Music of Leroy Anderson" combines two three-track stereo albums made of Anderson's music by Fennell in 1956 and 1964, respectively, and as they have been re-engineered, with the help of the original production team, to a Super Audio CD one would never guess that these recordings are so old. It is a generous selection, too, numbering to 23 tracks and including such rarities as Horse & Buggy and Chicken Reel. When the whip cracks in Horse & Buggy on a home theater system, you will think the whip has hit you between the eyes. Fennell's performances with the Eastman-Rochester Pops are authoritative, fun, and never drag. ~ David Lewis, All Music Guide
