Album Review
There have been several Supertramp best-of collections, but none of this magnitude; "Retrospectacle" covers all the bases of the prog-rock pop group. From their early days of excessive noodling, to their smash album "Breakfast in America" (over half of which is included here), to their later R&B-infected pop numbers, it's all here and it's all good. The first disc predominantly spawns their early prog rock days, and fans of this era will no doubt delight in hearing crisp remasters of "Your Poppa Don'T Mind" and the outstanding "Crime Of The Century." However, it's the second disc of this 32-song offering that contains Supertramp's finest moments. Maturing and refining themselves into a pop-song machine with hits like "The Logical Song" and "It'S Raining Again," Supertramp became practitioners of well-crafted, tightly-wound pop songs that skyrocketed to the top of the pop charts during the late '70s and early '80s. And while some of their later material doesn't hold water to the classics, it's still the most definitive overview of the band available and most likely all the Supertramp casual listeners and longtime fans alike will ever need in their collection. ~ Rob Theakston, All Music Guide
