Album Review

"WOW Hits 2007" seems to include everything that was right about another year of contemporary Christian music favorites. The exhaustively comprehensive collection joins veterans with newcomers, straight-up worship with crossover attempts, and modern rock with adult contemporary. The sixth annual incarnation works much the same as its predecessors (back to "WOW Hits 2002"), mixing and matching tracks from 33 CCM artists. Some, like the ubiquitous David Crowder Band and Jars of Clay, likely appear as a courtesy while up-and-comers like the Afters, Plumb and Building 429 maximize the exposure to catapult themselves out of relative obscurity. The project's appeal is its conspicuously similar sound to secular counterparts (even down to the album title, itself a mirror of the popular Now imprint). If you didn't know better, you might think you were listening to Evanescence, Hoobastank, Kelly Clarkson, Linkin Park, Nickelback and Death Cab for Cutie. There are some notable absences, like Bebo Norman, Jaci Velasquez and Audio Adrenaline, each of whom appeared on "WOW Hits 2005" or "2006". Still they leave no void, as hits by MercyMe, Casting Crowns, Rebecca St. James and many more create a varied, accessible collection. ~ Jared Johnson, All Music Guide
