Album Review

Another in an extremely successful line of collaborative Schubert recordings by pianist Leif Ove Andsnes and tenor Ian Bostridge, this installment focuses on the many fragments in Schubert's oeuvre. Andsnes' performance of the D. 958 C Minor Piano Sonata is truly captivating, making him a worthy successor to the masterful Schubert recordings made by Alfred Brendel. With equally matched musical and technical skills, Andsnes' Schubert is simply pristine. His approach to the instrument is quite demonstrative, almost as though he's guiding his listeners through the music as he performs. Although the D. 958 Sonata is not an unfinished work, there are moments when the momentum of the piece suddenly stops; Andsnes goes so far as to tell listeners the precise times these moments occur in his introduction in the liner notes, brilliantly tying this sonata into the remainder of the album. The fragments included on the CD are absolutely wrenching -- such a shame that Schubert either chose not to complete these works or was unable to before his untimely death. Tenor Ian Bostridge is not only a magnificent vocalist, but a wonderful complement to Andsnes playing. Bostridge's voice is satisfyingly warm and round for a tenor; he emotes continuously, telling the story of the text right along Andsnes. This album, along with others in the series, is absolutely worth adding to any collection. ~ Mike D. Brownell, All Music Guide
