Album Review
Just because they are all "number one hits" doesn't mean they're going to play nice together on a compilation. Regardless, Hip-O gives it a shot on their "Number 1's: Soundtrack Smashes". Sure, "Axel F" and the "Miami Vice Theme" can hang together, and the "Theme From Shaft" fits in there too, but then there's "9 To 5" and "Kokomo" taking the proceedings in an entirely different direction. It would have made sense to divide up the booty into specific themes (like "Action Film Instrumentals" or "Feel-Good Film Hits of the '80s") but, as it stands, this collection ends up as an archive of soundtrack hits, rather than a cohesive listening experience. ~ J.
