Album Review
Tapping into Universal Music's incredibly deep vaults, the people at Hip-O have seen fit to include Charlie Rich in their ongoing "Ultimate Collection" survey series. Rich, of course, became a top-selling country singer in the early '70s, scoring crossover gold with chart-toppers like "Behind Closed Doors" and "The Most Beautiful Girl In The World." In addition to those pop smashes, this 18-track set takes in many other highlights from Rich's long and varied career, which stretched from his early days at Sun Records in the late '50s to an incredible final session ("Pictures and Paintings") cut a few years before his death in 1995. Chronologically taking in his Sun, Groove, Smash, Epic, and Sire sides, the disc includes such Rich landmarks as "Lonely Weekends," "Mohair Sam," and "Feel Like Going Home." A fine retrospective of one of country music's most talented, versatile, and honest figures. ~ Stephen Cook, All Music Guide
