Album Review

The second volume in Hip-O's "Love Funk" series of compilations is actually an arguably stronger collection of funk music than its predecessor, or at least its equal. Many of the featured artists on the first volume return for the second, namely the Gap Band, Cameo, Rick James, the Ohio Players, and the Commodores. However, instead of "Burn Rubber," you get "You Dropped A Bomb On Me"; instead of "She'S Strange," you get "Word Up"; instead of "Cold Blooded," you get "Super Freak"; instead of "Love Rollercoaster," you get "Fire"; and instead of "Brick House," you get "Slippery When Wet" -- in sum, for the most part, you get better, or at least just-as-great, songs. And though it's unfortunate that Kool & the Gang and Parliament don't return for this second volume, you do get songs by James Brown ("Get Up [I Feel Like Being A] Sex Machine") and Marvin Gaye ("Got To Give It Up"), which are more than adequate compensation. Furthermore, many of the songs on this album appear in their extended versions; for example, "You Dropped A Bomb On Me" clocks in at over 13 minutes, "Got To Give It Up" clocks in at nearly 12 minutes, and "Super Freak" breaks the seven-minute mark. And finally, you really can't complain about any of the filler on this collection as well, because every song is a undeniable funk classic, making this a flawless collection of funk music that should appeal to pretty much anyone who, to quote the Bar-Kays' contribution, likes to "shake [their] rump to the funk." ~ Jason Birchmeier, All Music Guide
