Album Review

This 2002 reissue of Chick Corea's "Now He Sings, Now He Sobs" is identical in content to the earlier Blue Note CD reissue, except this edition is mastered in 24-bit sound. Accompanied by two excellent musicians, bassist Miroslav Vitous and drummer Roy Haynes, Corea's adventurous post-bop program includes 11 of his compositions, including the buoyant "Windows" (which has long since found favor with other jazz pianists), the tense and challenging opener "Steps-What Was," and the very playful "Matrix." "Gemini" is particularly intriguing, in that it is made up of two separately improvised piano solos, each of which is followed by a bass solo; both cuts were spliced together to create the final piece. This release is easily one of Corea's greatest accomplishments during his long, successful career and should be considered essential by jazz piano fans. ~ Ken Dryden, All Music Guide
