Album Review

It's always nice when a film has a strong soundtrack behind it. And while it's true that it's the visual image that sells, it's also true that an abysmal assortment of songs and score layered behind can drive moviegoers to frustrated distraction. Thankfully, the box office smash "How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days" doesn't have that affliction, and is accompanied by a solid accompanying album. "How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days" extols a classic, breezy vibe and, as an album in its own right, is an easy listen. From the old-style bash of Carly Simon's "You'Re So Vain" to the good old boy gold on George Thorogood & the Destroyers' "Who Do You Love," it's easy to see where the flow is going. But it's the newcomers who really make the soundtrack swing, as Australian Keith Urban dishes out the wonderful "Somebody Like You," reprising the honky tonk hit from his 2002 "Golden Road" LP, while Canadian pianist/vocalist Chantal Kreviazuk serves up powerhouse vocals on two tracks, the Randy Newman classic "Feels Like Home" and "Weight Of The World." Add Al Green's sexy classic "Let'S Stay Together" and Sixpence None the Richer's "Kiss Me" and the result is an eclectic yet cohesive kicker. So, success then, on all fronts, as the songs on "How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days" not only frame the on-screen love affair between Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey, but provide a simple and uncomplicated blueprint of classic sounds to boot. ~ Amy Hanson, All Music Guide
