Album Review
Nothing escapes marketing so a soundtrack to the über-hit "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy" was to be expected. But for once the marketing department got it right. Of course, music means a lot to the show, and as pointed out in the liner notes by executive producers David Collins and David Metzler (or as the Fab Five call them, "the Daves"), it's been that way since "Queer Eye"'s conception. They keep that high standard here, choosing tracks that are slick, edgy, and at very least, interesting. No big shock that dance music takes up the first half of the CD. Wide Life's "All Things" is the lone stereotypical floor-filler, but it's the show's theme and the unavoidable hook makes it easy to forgive this slight nod to the pedestrian. Then things get chic. The soulful "Good Luck" continues Basement Jaxx's series of stunning singles, the Chemical Brothers add some futuristic edge to a steamy Kylie Minogue track, and Ingrid's "You Promised Me" is one of those hooky and clever dance numbers that grabs you from first listen. The craze of mishmashing tunes doesn't escape the collection, here represented by a cheeky mix of Fischerspooner and Billy Squier that's as fun as it sounds. Then listeners slip into something more comfortable with the adult-oriented sounds of pop closing the set. A slight remix turns a mediocre Sting tune into a very good one, a glittery Liz Phair provides the only bit of angst, and a disco-esque Elton John doing his best Barry White impersonation brings listeners back to not-always-fabulous reality. Quippy and tip-filled liner notes are the icing on the cake, with caveats like Duran Duran were the first metrosexuals and cocktails should only be made with top-shelf liquors. That last tip sounds like something from Maxim or Playboy, so maybe everybody can get along after all, especially those listening to collections as swank and smart as this.
