Album Review

For Noreaga's long-awaited and oft-delayed third album, "God's Favorite", the thuggish New York rapper returns with many of the same producers who contributed to his previous album, "Melvin Flynt - Da Hustler" (1999), namely Ez Elpee, the Neptunes, and Swizz Beatz. Unlike on the often sparsely populated "Melvin Flynt", though, numerous rappers join Noreaga on "God's Favorite"; in fact, nearly every song here features at least one guest, if not more. Despite all the assistance, the best songs are the few solo moments stacked near the album's beginning: "Nothin'," "Grimey," and "Nahmeanuheard." Despite all the comparisons to "Melvin Flynt", which was a slight disappointment among Noreaga fans, "God's Favorite" is an improvement for the rapper, mostly because of the excellent production. The Neptunes contribute several bangers here, nearly one-third of the album, in fact. In addition, Swizz Beatz's contributions may be minimal in comparison ("Nahmeanuheard," "Wanna Be Like Him," "Nahmeanuheard Remix"), but they're some of the album's key moments. Furthermore, it's worth noting that Irv Gotti and Ja Rule collaborate with Noreaga on "Live My Life." If you're familiar with these producers, all of whom have very impressive track records and esteemed reputations, you know what to expect. On the other hand, given the patented sound of these producers, "God's Favorite" often sounds a bit more familiar than it probably should. Yet that seems to be the point. After falling off a bit since the late '90s, Noreaga needed a rock-solid return, and that's precisely what "God's Favorite" is, a straightforward album powered by sure-fire producers and colorful guests. ~ Jason Birchmeier, All Music Guide
