Album Review
With "Morning Wood", country comic Rodney Carrington has made three albums in three years, which is more than any but the most prolific comedian should attempt, and the strain of coming up with new material is starting to show. "Morning Wood" is a thin collection, padded out with Carrington's comic songs, a couple of which are included twice, in both live and studio versions. It seems to be a requirement of country comedians that they also sing humorous country songs, and Carrington thankfully has a good voice. His topics are the usual ones, from smutty cracks to send-ups of Orientals, Mexicans, and homosexuals. But this time around, he's getting by mostly on attitude, spinning out his jokes through repetition and audience interaction, which works better in the clubs he plays than on record. Next time he should either write an entire music album or wait until he really has an album's worth of spoken material. ~ William Ruhlmann, All Music Guide
