Album Review
Verve's "Number 1's: Jazz" features 17 top radio and jukebox hits spanning four decades, from Billie Holiday's 1944 classic "Lover Man (Oh, Where Can You Be?)" to John Handy's 1976 release "Hard Work." In between are legendary performances by Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, Jimmy Smith, Ramsey Lewis, Dinah Washington, Nina Simone, and Quincy Jones. This is a decent primer collection for the jazz novice and a great-sounding disc for interested audiophiles. ~ Al Campbell, All Music Guide
