Album Review

"Let the Good Times Roll, Vol. 1" is a fine sampling of 20 classic New Orleans R&B tracks. Alongside the six tunes by Fats Domino are late-'50s and early-'60s hits from Lee Dorsey, Aaron Neville, Shirley & Lee, Roy Brown, Irma Thomas, the Showmen, Ernie K-Doe, Jessie Hill, Lloyd Price, and Earl King. Credit must also be given for the inclusion of "She Put The Hurt On Me" by Prince La La, a track that doesn't show up often on hits-based packages like this one. Also thrown in for good measure is Little Richard's "Tutti Frutti." While Little Richard Penniman wasn't from the Crescent City, he recorded there with a band that included saxophonists Lee Allen and Alvin "Red" Tyler and drummer Earl Palmer. While there is nothing new here for the collector, these are the original recordings from the vaults of Imperial, Amy, Aladdin, Minit, and Speciality, and along with the companion volume, "Let the Good Times Roll, Vol. 1" is highly recommended. ~ Al Campbell, All Music Guide
