Album Review

This Rounder compilation brings together nearly all of the greatest names in contemporary bluegrass, each of 'em a-preachin' and a-prayin' their hearts out. Big shooters like Alison Krauss, Blue Highway, Rhonda Vincent, Tony Rice, Claire Lynch, and Lynn Morris all step up to the pulpit and lend their talents to both traditional spirituals and original gospel numbers. Terrific performances are expected and delivered from all of the big names involved, but nice surprises come from relative newcomers Open Road and Alecia Nugent, and a couple of spectacular turns from legendary (but sadly underappreciated) acts Jim & Jesse McReynolds and the Johnson Mountain Boys. Other highlights include the Whitstein Brothers' note-perfect Louvin Brothers cover "Make Him A Soldier," Blue Highway's chillingly ethereal "The Seventh Angel" (featuring Alison Krauss on harmony vocals), and Jeff White and Vince Gill's joyous "All Prayed Up." Leave it to Rounder to keep consistently cranking out the best in American roots music, regardless of the subject matter. ~ Zac Johnson, All Music Guide
